বাগচী কলকাতাৰ প্ৰেচিডেন্সি কলেজৰ পৰা অৰ্থনীতিত স্নাতকোত্তৰ আৰু ১৯৬৩ চনত কেম্ব্ৰিজৰ ট্ৰিনিটি কলেজৰ পৰা পি এইচ ডি লাভ কৰে।^২ প্ৰেচিডেন্সি কলেজৰ পৰা তেওঁৰ শিক্ষকতাৰ জীৱন আৰম্ভ হয়, তাৰ পাছত ১৯৬০ চনত তেওঁ কেম্ব্ৰিজ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ৰ অৰ্থনীতি অনুষদত কিছুদিন কাম কৰে, য'ত তেওঁ জিছুছ কলেজৰ ফেলো আছিল।^৩ ১৯৬৯ চনত তেওঁ পদত্যাগ কৰি প্ৰেচিডেন্সি কলেজলৈ উভতি যায়।^২৪

বাগচী ভাৰতীয় বেংকিং আৰু বিত্ত ইতিহাসৰ বিশেষজ্ঞ আছিল আৰু ১৯৯৭ চনলৈকে তেওঁ ভাৰতীয় ষ্টেট বেংকৰ চৰকাৰী ইতিহাসবিদ হিচাপে কাম কৰিছিল।^৫

২০০১ চনত কলকাতাৰ সমাজ বিজ্ঞান অধ্যয়ন কেন্দ্ৰৰ পৰা ভাৰতীয় ৰিজাৰ্ভ বেংকৰ অধ্যক্ষ অধ্যাপক হিচাপে অৱসৰ লোৱাৰ পাছত তেওঁ কলকাতা উন্নয়ন অধ্যয়ন প্ৰতিষ্ঠানৰ প্ৰতিষ্ঠাপক-সঞ্চালক হয়।^৫
